I’ve always liked the modest looking beast. The inconspicuous.
The greatest sleepers are always. The TEST MULE. The 348 is not a very fast car, by todays standards. But this MULE is a far cry from a 348.
BTW I’d drive a stock 348,and LOVE it

You could call the 300ZX turbo a sleeper. It’s cosmetically the same as the regular 300ZX except for some vents on the bumper, but it was one of the fastest cars of its day.
Or that XJ220 van. The Jag rims are just perfect.
The van parts
aren’t even in good condition
. All the bits that aren’t XJ220 are just well-used Ford Transit.

That’s one of my favorite Ferrari prototypes. Not really a “sleeper” inasmuch as any Ferrari can be one, but a hell of a cool mule.
I’ll suggest a pair of Porsche 928s in disguise, the Audi 100 coupe-bodied prototypes, and the one that’s bodied as a VW Rabbit.

Disclaimer: I’ve never watched Street Outlaws and it sounds like a stupid show, but Farm Truck.
As for a factory-built sleeper: it doesn’t get better than a first-gen SHO.

My favorite sleeper I’ve ever owned was my 2005 Dodge Magnum RT AWD. Just looked like a big ugly green grocery getter, but most people wouldn’t notice the subtle HEMI badges on the fenders or the small RT on the tailgate, or even know what they meant. But that ugly pig was packing 340 hp under the hood and with the added traction of AWD could tick off 0-60 in just a hair over 5 seconds. Surprised a lot of Mustangs with that car. Looked just like this one but without a roof rack:

You’d have to be born under a rock to not know about these. Even if the giant body cladding didn’t tip you off. Fast but hardly incognito.

You’d have to be born under a rock to be a car enthusiast and not know about these. Even if the giant body cladding didn’t tip you off. Fast but hardly incognito.

It’s a 25yo, VERY limited production, GMC pickup. The cladding could either clue you in to something special or throw you down the ricer path. And even someone who clues in to it being special is probably going to get a huge shock out of how fast it actually is.

Furthermore, the S10 xTreme was a thing that happened and was a pain Jane S10 with a body kit and no substance. People who know of the xTreme but not the Typhoon might assume it’s just another factory ricer.

panel vans, and........
tired old trucks....... you can fit just about anything in between the framerails, and the louder, and more obnoxious they sound, the better......... when you outrun a brand new higher end performance car........
